some of my friends are also spawning. my plan was to make toys and mittens. i also saw a babycostumething [onesie?] with the Polish flat and coat of arms in a souvenir shop and thought it would be ideal for the ones who live in the Polish neighbourhood in toronto.

I've only knit for baby boys, so I feel pretty confident in suggesting Trellis by Britta Stolfus Rueschhoff from Knitty and the Ribbed Baby Jacket by Debbie Bliss, which is also a free pattern on Ravelry. Both are complete gender-neutral depending on the color you choose. For the Ribbed Baby Jacket, I sewed on a big button with snap underneath to make it easy for mom and dad, plus I didn't have to do a button hole! Good luck!

The Kindred Knits Auto Vest (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kindred-knits-auto-vest) by Hannah Fettig is the cutest boys knit I've seen in a while.

Why don't you knit them toys. It's fun and gender neutral! I quite like Bob http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bob-2 and this thingie http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/celestine-sox. And I knit Otto Brown http://www.ravelry.com/projects/KirstenMarie/otto, but I never managed to part with her. She now lives on my sofa.

Baby Yoda sweater is great for boys: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-yoda-sweater, must admit most of the projects on my Ravelry page are for little girls, I've queued a couple you've mentioned now as many of my friends are due this autumn.
