At some point when I was young, my mum made us each a large red stocking, with twenty-four pretty green and gold pockets on the front. In each pocket there would be a tiny gift, such as doll shoes or a sweet. Then on the 24th our stockings would be filled with silly little presents to open on Christmas morning. My mum did this for us every year until a few years ago, when my sister and I were both away from home most of advent, and my brothers aren't really bothered. For a couple of years she would sent quotes and sparkles held in tiny handmade envelopes. She's stopped bothering now, which makes sad, but I have to grow up I suppose... So I bought myself a Thomas the Tank Engine advent calendar for this year. I had to admit to the man at the counter in Tesco that no, I'm not a mother nor an auntie, that yes, it was for me. Shame!
