Hello.

Excuse me while I pretend I constantly hang about grey wooden panels wearing a red woollen dress and a gawjus mossy green scarf/shawl. Okay, so I actually do that quite a bit but I rarely wear matching lipstick and have my photo taken whilst faffing, so there is that.

In short, we had a photo shoot for the Karise shawl yesterday. For some reason the sun came out just as I took off my cape and the sunshine just made everything so much easier. I am never comfortable in front of a camera (stand straight, suck in tummy, smile, look natural) but the photo shoot wasn’t too bad.

Everywhere you go, you always take the weather with you..

Hopefully that means tomorrow will be sunny too. I am heading out to West Kilbride to see Old Maiden Aunt’s Lilith and her new studio. Her housewarming is on Saturday but true to form I shall be working, so instead I am heading out to lend a hand prepping the place for the hordes. Some sunshine would be most welcome as my train will have a view of the Isle of Arran – and Arran is just prettier when it is sunny.

Oh, hell. Here you go. That song. I don’t actually like it, you know, but it is the sound of summer..

My partner collects photos. He likes going through old photos in junk shops and buying whichever catches his eyes. He recently found these photos. In his own words:

There’s something a bit sad and also a bit voyeuristic about this, but it spans maybe 20 years of this woman’s life and a chunk of her daughter’s. It’s mostly sad because I found these photos scattered in amongst a couple of hundred more in a junk shop..

I am posting them here in roughly chronological order (as far as we can tell). The first woman is identified only as J. and the baby is identified as “Dianne” (also pictured as a young woman in the last photo).

Along the way I passed one of my favourite pieces of street art. Seeing this little happy seal never fails to cheer me up. Look at his wibble face!

Usually any graffiti or street art gets removed rather swiftly, but this little fellow has graced the side of the bridge for as long as I can remember. Maybe he cheers up the park wardens too?

Leaving the footpath running through the arboretum, I entered the actual Botanical Gardens. Snowdrops, croci and this almost-in-bloom tree. The sun continued to shine. I saw students curling up on benches trying to focus on their books (and failing miserably).

I honestly felt tempted to buy myself some coffee and a croissant, and join the students on the benches but I’ve been down this road before and know the Sore Throat and Blocked Nose consequences far too well.

Besides, I had errands to run like a proper grown-up. Well, if you saw my errands you’d refuse to believe I’m a grown-up but I’ll save that for a later post..

Needless to say, I was also cheered by my lovely sunshine-yellow beret that I am wearing a lot at the moment. My beret matches the yellow crocus flowers, I discovered, which pleases me no end.

Then I came home to find my postie had left a parcel for me. I had ordered some African wax print cotton off eBay and it arrived today! Hooray!

My fabric is lovely and I had a very, very pleasant transaction with the eBay seller (who I recommend wholeheartedly – how often can you say that about eBay sellers?). The fabric is earmarked for the Crepe dress which I have a notion to make many, many times. I just need to find fabric for the sash (maybe do the sash out of the same fabric? It is so busy it doesn’t need to be broken up by a solid colour) and, of course, find the time..

.. because right now I’m really, really busy trying to make my piece for the Tramway exhibition work. Right now I have a bucket wallpaper paste and a bag of old newspapers lurking in my bathroom. No prizes for guessing what we’ve been up to tonight.

At a recent knitting group, a friend worried that I would become a Sewer rather than a Knitter. Fear not. I may have spent a small fortune in a fabric shop yesterday but my first love remains knitting.

And I have actually been knitting away on a couple of projects. To wit:

Progress is being made on my piece for the Loop exhibition next month.

Oh god. I'm knitting a sock! Try and see if you can guess the pattern. Yarn's The Thylacine's Wellington in "Blackwood".

And a belated birthday present arrived yesterday.. Shiny!

Addendum: Knitting as Therapy. A very good blog post about body image, self-acceptance, and knitting. Warmly recommend. I’m not the emotional sort but even I had a lump in my throat after reading this.

Pause, rewind.

Sewing is a different process to knitting. So far I have traced the pattern, worked up a toile (muslin) and discovered that I need to move the bust darts higher as well as doing a FBA. It is sort of a pre-process prior to making the actual garment out of the fancy fabric. Had this been knitting, I would have swatched using the actual yarn and probably be well under way making the actual thing itself.

Different processes. It’s interesting.

Anyway. Random selection of linky bits:
+ The George Hotel, Glasgow. If you like urban decay, faded glamour or Trainspotting (the film, not the activity)
+ Is Denmark Breaching Human Rights? The other reason why I left Denmark. Even if D has a so-called “correct” skin tone and is an EU citizen, he would still get so much flak. No way would I put him through that.
+ BBC4 – The Beauty of Books. For a programme series apparently about the materiality of books, it does boast a suspicious amount of textual critics and biblical scholars. I was not impressed but I’m not exactly a layman. You might like it?
+ 100 Young Adult Books For the Feminist Reader. I spot certain omissions (such as this and this) but everyone’s got opinions and it’s a handy list.
+ Are you a knitter of the literary persuasion? Why not give the Beowulf socks a go?

Finally, I’ve derived great enjoyment from this video tonight.. Enjoy!

You get intense skies, beautiful colours and so much unexpected depth. As a young student I remember poring over John Keats’ ‘To Autumn’ with its Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun.. It took a move across to the North sea to fully appreciate those words.

Anyway, David took that photo walking home from a grocery shopping expedition in the busy West End. We live in outskirts of the West End and isn’t it just beautiful here..?

Knitting post tomorrow. It’ll be a tale of woe and joy.

Pope Benedict XVI is visiting Scotland and England over the next few days. I have never lived anywhere with a big Catholic community and it is interesting to see how Glasgow is reacting. I do not know if it is the result of the Glasgow Airport terrorist attack, but the amount of security is quite surprising; The main motorway is being shut down for an entire day, several areas surrounding the park where the Pope will address pilgrims have been shut off and certain trains are designated pilgrims-only. This reminds me of when George W. Bush visited Denmark at his height of his unpopularity – boy, it was fun to navigate Copenhagen that day – but mainly it strikes me as odd that a religious leader can generate so much fuss.

Then again I identify as a secular humanist. One of these days I need to make myself a “Humanist; Not a Dawkins Fan”, though. One of the Pope’s aides have pulled out of the UK visit following an interview wherein he criticises the UK for “a new and aggressive atheism”. The media have reacted strongly to this, of course, but I think I know which brand of atheism the aide is referring to and, honestly, it is a form of atheism that makes me uncomfortable too. I need to write more about this, but suffice to say that a) I’m puzzled by the Pope’s visit and b) I hope all my Catholic friends in Glasgow will have a memorable and good day.

If course there is one religious belief with which I do feel connected: Forn Sidr or Asatru, the belief in the old Norse gods. I grew up with the stories and while I do not believe, there is definitely a connection. I think it is about growing up in a landscape where you see remnants of the ancient past everywhere and seeing the forces of nature unfold before your eyes. Again, I need to write more about this.

And there is a knitting aspect, of course.

Last night I cast on for Idunn. I assumed this would be a commuter project: The February Beret by sockpixie. I made this hat in orange last year and it turned out to be the most flattering hat I have ever owned – well, apart from the rusty orange hue. As soon as I finished it last year, I began thinking about those two precious balls of Scottish Tweed DK in “Apple Green” from my stash. Ever since Rowan discontinued Scottish Tweed due to supply issues, I have been acting all dragon-like what with the hoarding and jealous guarding.. but yarn is really meant to be knitted up and so here we are.

And Idunn was a Norse goddess associated with apples.

I don’t think it’ll be much of a commuter project because I’m halfway done. Just in time for the first autumnal winds and heavy rainfall. I love being a knitter.

PPS. I shall be in Copenhagen November 4 until November 8, so get in touch if you know of any knit night/knit event/yarn sale.

A friend of mine has crossed the North Sea to visit us here in rainy Glasgow. We took her to the Cathedral district yesterday. D. and my friend walked up the Necropolis while I lounged decoratively on a bench.

Afterwards we went inside St. Mungo’s Cathedral – one of my favourite places to see stained glass windows here in Glasgow (and you’d be surprised by just how much stained class you find here – both in public and private homes).

My favourite window keeps changing. Yesterday I fell in love with this slightly barmy one: The Knight With A Galleon On His Head. I’m sure it has a real title or epitaph, but I like my version much better than “David Tavish Farquar, the 16th Duke of Skirlie In Memory of His Brother Simon, Lord of Colcannon”.

Time for tea and buttered scones, I think. A busy day lies ahead.
